WORKING THERAPEUTICALLY WITH CHILDREN

USING A CREATIVE TOOL-BOX.

At OPEN BOOK COUNSELLING I provide a safe space for children to explore their feelings and experiences using various creative and play-based therapeutic techniques either on a 121 or group setting.

Play is one of the main ways in which children communicate,  learn and develop emotionally and psychologically.

Imaginative play helps to build self worth by giving a child a sense of his or her own abilities and to feel good about themselves. Because it’s fun, children often become very absorbed in what they are doing; it is an integral part of a child's Early Years Foundation Stage and supports their learning journey too.

Young children can develop many skills through the power of play. They may develop their language skills, emotions, creativity and social skills.

Play helps to nurture imagination and give a child a sense of adventure. Through this, they can learn essential skills such as problem solving, working with others, sharing and much more.

At OPEN BOOK COUNSELLING when I am  working with children and young people therapeutically the child explores at his or her own pace and with his or her own agenda addressing any issues and/or trauma, past and current, conscious or unconscious, that are affecting the child’s life in the present. The child’s inner resources are enabled by the therapeutic relationship they foster with their therapist and, if in a group setting, with their peers; to bring about growth and change.

The creative play sessions are child-centred, in which play is the primary medium and speech is the secondary medium; as children depending on their development and traumatic experience may not be able to vocalise themselves or have the ability to process within themselves what has happened to them.

I have 15 years worth of experience in working with children creatively and therapeutically and have an up to date DBS as well as having thorough training in safeguarding children.
